Math placement test
UW–Madison students are required to take the Math B placement test.
Math B is the proctored version of the UW Math placement test, while Math A is the non-proctored version of the placement test.
Do not take Math A. UW–Madison does not accept results from Math A.
The Math B placement test is offered online (preferred method) and in-person (as needed). To take the Math B placement test, you will need to schedule an appointment.
Scheduling a Math B online placement test appointment:
There is a non-refundable fee of $40 to schedule an appointment via Live Remote Proctoring (LRP). More information about how to schedule a remotely proctored test can be found in the email you receive from candidatesupport@meazurelearning.com in the section labeled Live Remote Proctoring. Some students are eligible for need-based financial assistance to cover the $40 LRP fee.
Or, you may schedule a paper-based Math B test in person at the UW–Madison campus. There is no fee for the in-person option. After you complete the registration form, a list of dates for the in-person Math B test will be available on the registration page.
Understanding your math placement
English placement test
There are two tests used to determine the placement of a student into courses focused on the development of skills needed for success in college-level communications:
- UW English Placement Test (UWEPT)
- UW–Madison English as a Second Language Assessment Test (MSNESLAT)
How to take the English test
After you have registered for the UW placement tests, you will be able to access the English test by following the instructions on your registration confirmation page in the section labeled “On-Demand Testing”.
More information about the ESLAT
The UW–Madison English as a Second Language Assessment Test (ESLAT) is used to:
- assess students’ English language skills required for academic work in a U.S. university classroom.
- determine whether a student must enroll in academic English coursework at UW–Madison.
The ESLAT is required for students who must submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo English Test (DET) score for admission to UW–Madison.
TOEFL, IELTS or DET scores are required for applicants educated in non-English speaking countries, unless English was the primary language of instruction of the student in all four years of secondary school. The score requirement is also waived for transfer students if a college-level English composition course was successfully completed at an accredited U.S. institution. This requirement cannot be waived by Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or A-level
Additional information about the ESLAT, including a sample test, can be found on the ESL Program’s website.
